Dollar steadies against major peers before the PCE inflation report
LONDON — by Marcus Ellery ·
The dollar index hovered around 101.24 in European hours, unchanged on the day, as currency desks reported thin volumes typical of a pre-data session. Sample flow data compiled for this sandbox shows a modest reduction in short dollar positioning over the past week.
The euro was quoted at 1.0942, a fraction below Friday's close, while sterling edged up to 1.2871 after firmer than expected retail figures. The yen was the day's mild outperformer, with USD/JPY slipping to 146.82.
Analysts polled for this illustrative dataset expect core inflation to print in line with consensus, which would leave rate expectations broadly unchanged and keep the dollar rangebound into month end.
Attention later in the week turns to regional manufacturing surveys and a batch of central bank speakers, any of which could break the current consolidation.
